Space is Still Available in Two New Steel Painting Workshops with Mike Elsass

Dayton painter Mike Elsass is known for his striking abstract acrylic paintings on rusted steel. He has painted and taught throughout Canada and the U.S. (including Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs) and we’re happy to have him here with us again this year to share his knowledge and materials in two fun, spontaneous sessions. Mike’s artwork is represented in fine art galleries throughout the country, including Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs, OH.

The classes will take place outside Springs Gallery on Kings Yard. There is no age limit. All materials and supplies are provided and students can take home a piece of their own creation. The cost is $70 for one workshop and $140 for both. Advance registration is required. Students must present the gallery with a paid receipt in order to receive their materials and participate on that day.

Here are a few more of the photos I made yesterday during Sharon Stolzenberger's Llama Life Drawing workshop outside Springs Gallery on Kings Yard in Yellow Springs. It was a fun day - and the llamas seemed to enjoy all the attention.

Folk Artists at Springs Gallery

Springs Gallery in Yellow Springs is pleased to present the clay folk art and jewelry of John and Nancy Grosella of West Milton, Ohio. The exhibit runs May 30 through August 30, 2012, with an artists’ reception on Friday, June 15, from 6 PM to 9 PM. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

The Grosellas are not your typical artists (whatever that is). As a young girl Nancy and her sister played with modeling clay for hours in their home in Dayton. “She showed me how to form shapes - I loved it!” said Nancy. Her sister later moved to California, making and selling her stoneware art. In 1971, she came home for a visit and taught Nancy to work in stoneware as well. “After three months I was helping her fill her orders,” she said. “We sent porcelain clowns to California and whales to Hawaii. We later made jewelry from polymer clay adding recycled antique jewelry pieces.”

In 1978, Nancy married John Grosella, of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and found he also had a love of clay. “John’s real passions are American history and painting;” said Nancy, “so he combines his talents by creating terra-cotta buildings, then intricately hand paints them to resemble historical towns,” she said. “We have fun in our little studio in West Milton, ‘playing with clay.’”

Sharon has taught for Springs Gallery before and she is very good - skilled, creative and nurturing. The class is this coming Saturday, June 2, 2-4 pm on Kings Yard outside Springs Gallery. Don't let the llama be lonely! (Actually, we need sign ups by Thursday - Friday at the very latest. If we don't get a few more - we'll need to postpone it for another time.) Come join us -it will be fun!

LLAMA LIFE DRAWING

Where: Outside the gallery on Kings Yard, 220 Xenia Avenue, Yellow Springs, OH
When: Saturday, June 2, 2012, 2PM – 4PM
Fee: $30; minimal supplies needed; advance registration is required.

In this workshop we will be working from a live model, practicing skills needed to draw from life. The instructor will demonstrate and discuss ways to sketch the model from contour to gesture drawings to finished drawings. Participants will have ample time to work from the model. Supplies needed can be inexpensive drawing paper, HB pencils, charcoal, charcoal pencils, crayons...whatever makes marks that you are comfortable working with. Also bring a few sheets of good drawing paper with a sturdy board (foamcore, gatorbord, plywood) and clips for the paper.
Instructor Sharon Stolzenberger is a graduate of the Dayton Art Institute. She began her art career as an illustrator, then art director, with Gibson Greeting Card Company. Now self-employed, she paints full time and exhibits in Springs Gallery and in art shows throughout the country. Her mixed media paintings have won awards in many Ohio Watercolor Society exhibitions and have exhibited nationally in the Society of Animal Artists annual exhibitions. Sharon’s work has also been included in books such as New Creative Collage Techniques and Confident Color by Nita Leland, both from North Light Books.
